Escher’s Hairmaze is a whimsical illustration originally inspired by a smaller doodle. The piece is optically illusionistic and can be viewed from all orientations, highlighting how our experiences are derived from our unique perspectives. The maze begins in the centre where the hair of a person in a black dress trails through the entire illustration winding in and out of the architecture. The piece shows that as we grow older and our hair gets longer, we collect experiences and people like they are getting tangled in out hair. The use of architecture symbolizes how our pathways are not linear and that the choices we make, or “the doors” we go through, define our experience and trajectory.
